These are fiber-shaped thermal insulation products made by centrifugal spinning from high-temperature molten materials. In the industrial sector, they comply with the same product standard: “Rock wool, slag wool and their products for thermal insulation—GB/T11835-2007.”
(1) Similarities
a. All are fiber-shaped thermal insulation products made by centrifugal spinning from high-temperature melts;
b. In the industrial sector, the same product standard—“Rock wool, slag wool and their products for thermal insulation GB/T11835-2007”—is applied.
c. In the construction sector, the same product standard shall be implemented (except for external wall external thermal insulation): “Rock Wool and Slag Wool Thermal Insulation Products for Building Use” GB/T19686-2005;
(2) Differences
a. Different raw materials: Rock wool is primarily made from natural minerals such as basalt (or diabase); mineral wool, on the other hand, is primarily made from industrial waste residues like blast-furnace slag.
b. Rock wool has superior fiber mechanical properties, temperature resistance, and chemical stability compared to mineral wool.
c. Mineral wool contains a relatively high amount of alkaline compounds, and its dimensional stability and water resistance in humid environments are poorer than those of rock wool.
d. Mineral wool has a lower acidity coefficient than rock wool and is inferior to rock wool in terms of weather resistance and service life.
e. The operating temperature of mineral wool fibers is lower than that of rock wool, and their volumetric stability at high temperatures is poorer than that of rock wool.
