Ion exchange resins contain a certain amount of moisture, and this moisture should be preserved as much as possible during transportation and storage. If the resin becomes dehydrated during storage, it should first be soaked in a saltwater solution (10%) and then gradually diluted. It must not be placed directly into water, as this could cause the resin to swell rapidly and break.
Resin storage:

During long-term storage, strongly acidic resins should be converted into their salt forms, while weakly acidic resins can be converted into their corresponding hydrogen forms or free-base forms, or alternatively, into salt forms, and then soaked in clean water. During storage and transportation, the resin should be kept in an environment with a temperature range of 5–40°C, avoiding both excessively low and excessively high temperatures that could affect its quality. In winter, if no heating equipment is available, the resin can be stored in a salt solution, with the concentration of the salt solution adjusted according to the ambient temperature. Pre-treatment of new resins: New resins often contain solvents, unreacted monomers, and small amounts of low-molecular-weight polymers. They may also adsorb heavy metal ions such as iron, aluminum, and copper. When the resin comes into contact with water, acids, bases, or other solutions, these soluble impurities can leach into the solution, contaminating the effluent water quality during the initial stages of use. Therefore, new resins must undergo pre-treatment before being put into operation.
1. Pre-treatment of cation exchange resin:
First, use a saturated salt solution—taking an amount approximately twice the volume of the resin to be treated. Immerse the resin in the salt solution for 18 to 20 hours, then drain the salt solution completely and rinse thoroughly with clean water until the effluent no longer exhibits a yellow color.
Next, use a 2% to 4% NaOH solution in the same quantity as before, and soak the resin in it for 2 to 4 hours (or perform low-flow cleaning). After completely draining the alkaline solution, rinse the resin thoroughly with water until the effluent becomes nearly neutral.
Finally, soak in a 5% HCl solution—using the same volume as described above—for 4 to 8 hours. Drain off the acid solution completely and rinse thoroughly with clean water until neutral; then set aside for use.
2. Pretreatment of the anion resin: The first step in its pretreatment method is identical to the first step in the cation resin pretreatment method. Subsequently, soak the resin in 5% HCl for 4 to 8 hours, then drain off the acid solution and rinse it with water until the effluent becomes neutral. Next, soak the resin in a 2% to 4% NaOH solution for 4 to 8 hours, drain off the alkaline solution, and rinse it thoroughly with fresh water until the effluent becomes neutral before use.
